My son and I went to the jungles of Belize and went on some serious adventures. But I want to say… never, ever, ask a teenager to pick an activity when jumping off cliffs and crawling into deep holes are some of the choices
Our first day, we did the “black hole drop” which meant we hiked through jungle and up mountainside to rappel (did I mention I’m afraid of heights?) 330 feet back down through the rainforest canopy. On our hike back, we heard Howler Monkeys, roaring all around us. Our second day we went caving. This was pretty cool because we put on miner’s helmets and walked, waded, and crawled through an underground stream. I even forgot I‘m seriously claustrophobic!
I’d never have thought I’d do anything like this, but the guides from Caves Branch Jungle Lodge made sure we would be safe and secure! Next time I go there though, I’m going to take it easy, do some river tubing, and eat more of their wonderful food.
The second part of our trip was at Thatch Caye Resort. Travis picked us up in Dangriga then we took his boat out to the caye. Even though we were pretty isolated, they had a satellite TV on a big LCD screen and access to the Web. And everything was powered by wind and sun!I was sore all over from our jungle adventures so I took it easy the first day. My son went fishing with another couple, and they caught so many fish we had a feast for dinner. He said it was a tough catch because the frigate birds kept swooping in to steal the fish. So, while they were away, I roamed the caye, did some swimming, and took pictures of the two resident Agouti and the family of Coati Mundi.
The next day, we went snorkeling – the reef is incredible, and the water is crystal clear. We could see conchs, 30 feet below, ambling along the bottom and rays gliding all over the place.
My son fell in love with Belize, especially Thatch Caye, and is ready to go back again at a moments notice!

Wow! I have done alot of research on this adventure trip. It has VERY high reviews from everyone that has gone. Did you stay in the Tree Fort Rooms??? I would love to do the the Black Hole Drop and the Tube Caving excursion….I also wanted to camp over night in the cave, I have heard that they tell ghost stories? Were you able to fit any of these excursions into your trip?
Thanks for sharing your trip adventure and your pictures…..
Kelan, looks like a cool trip! Love your photos!
